Day 8 In memory of Nev Harris

August 11th, 2010 · No Comments

We left Melk at 6.15am in attempt to make a 9am appointment in Vienna with the Austrian Children’s Cancer org. In spite of our best efforts the locks slaughtered us again and we were half an hour late. Beautiful Vienna put on some sun for us and we had a good stop for an hour with snacks and drinks provided. Thanks must go to Sabine for organising this and putting up with our chnaged scedule. Then it was off at full speed again to Bratislava in Slovakia for a free refuel provided by some mates of Ivans. Thanks guys. We had planned another appointment in Budapest Hungary at 4pm the same afternoon and sped down the river in perfect conditions until we reached a Slovakian lock. PWCs are not allowed in locks in Slovakia so we spent an hour and a half convincing them to let us through. The fact that they couldn’t speak a word of English didn’t help either. In the end they did let us through but they made us tie up to a barge for the transit. Smiling and patience save the day again but as a result we completely missed the Budapest appointment much to the disappointment of the kids waiting to see us. We are grateful to Eduard and Peter for helping with this event and are sorry we didn’t make it in time. Footnote:Arriving in Budapest by river is one of the most memorable things I have ever seen. The architecture is astounding. If you get a chance you should go there.
Passed through 3 countries today!!!!
